Wicked Onyx by Debbie Cassidy is a fantasy romance with dark academia elements, following Anamaya Onyx, a witch whose bloodline was cursed centuries ago after being severed from the Weave, the source of magic. To uncover the truth behind that punishment, Anamaya enrolls at Nightbridge Academy, a magical school tied directly to the society that once shunned her ancestry. Her goal is simple but dangerous: find a forbidden book hidden in a secret library that may explain why her bloodline was truly punished in the first place, while trying to survive in a place where her bloodline is still shunned and keeping her real reason for being there to herself.

On paper, Wicked Onyx has everything I usually love: magical creatures, murder mystery elements, thriller vibes, supernatural lore, and romantic tension. Thatโ€™s why this one didnโ€™t work for me. The book feels rushed, like itโ€™s trying too hard to be the next Fourth Wing instead of letting its own story develop. Things happen, but they donโ€™t sit long enough to matter, and even though the ideas are there, they never quite come together in a way that kept me invested.

Review

Overall Impressions ๐Ÿ˜Š

Although I was really excited about the premise of Wicked Onyx, as the pages went on, I found myself losing interest and just wanting to finish the book. My expectations were pretty high judging by the strong premise and the high want to read count on Goodreads, and maybe thatโ€™s why it was such a letdown for me.

I thought Iโ€™d be swept up in a complex dark academia story, but instead I found the plot confusing, the characters underdeveloped, and the story beats rushing so quickly that they didnโ€™t have much emotional impact for me.

Thatโ€™s not to say there arenโ€™t good parts in this book. I enjoyed Anamayaโ€™s interactions with almost everyone, and there are some romantic tension scenes Iโ€™ve reread. For me, those moments felt more like snippets of immersive scenes rather than a thrilling overall experience.

Perfect For Fans Of… ๐Ÿงญ

Wicked Onyx is a dark academia story with a heavy focus on supernatural species. It feels a bit like Zodiac Academy meets Gossip Girl, with a strong supernatural lean. There are some genuinely interesting fantastical elements here, including magical creatures I actually had to look up. If you enjoy being introduced to new supernatural species, this book does lean into that curiosity, even down to questions like what exactly is a barghest.

That said, the number of supernatural elements does add to an already overloaded story, and for me it sometimes worked against the book rather than strengthening it. Still, readers who enjoy learning about new creatures and species may find that aspect fun and engaging.

The story takes place at a magical school and includes found family dynamics, along with a love triangle that doesnโ€™t feel like itโ€™s going away anytime soon. Youโ€™ll likely enjoy this book if you like large casts of characters, lots of interaction between them, and strong character chemistry, especially in a school setting.

Characters ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

While Iโ€™ll touch on individual characters, my main issue overall was that the cast felt far too crowded. For a first book in a series, I usually want two or three main characters and a small handful of side characters, but here it felt like someone new was being introduced every other chapter. Some characters disappear entirely, while others suddenly reappear in the final act, which left me feeling confused. Combined with the very unique approach to magical creatures, it made the story harder to follow than it needed to be.

Having such a large cast also made it difficult to really connect with anyone, since most characters donโ€™t stay on the page long enough to leave an impression. Personally, I would have loved to see the focus narrowed to Anamaya, Vitra, Drayven, the inner circle, and one or two villainous characters. That alone would have been more than enough for me.

Anamaya as a main character was a mixed experience. Iโ€™m honestly pretty burnt out on edgy, lone wolf FMCs who have had it hard, donโ€™t trust anyone, and insist they can handle everything themselves. At this point, those characters tend to blur together for me. That said, if a sassy, capable FMC is still something you actively enjoy, Anamaya does fit that role well and will likely work better for readers who arenโ€™t as fatigued by that archetype.

Drayven and Vitra, the golden retriever boyfriend and black cat boyfriend respectively, were enjoyable enough and pretty solid representations of those familiar romantasy roles. What didnโ€™t work for me was how quickly the attraction developed. The relationships jump from zero to one hundred with very little buildup, and everyone seems instantly invested in each other. That same issue applies to the friendships as well, which made the emotional connections feel rushed.

The villains were harder for me to engage with. Tamina and Sterling, both vampires, felt almost too evil, without much depth or contrast to balance them out. As antagonists, they came across as fairly one note, which made them feel less compelling than they could have been.

Plot ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

I found the plot very fractured. There are too many threads happening at once, from Anamayaโ€™s bloodline and whatโ€™s going on with it, to the missing mystery girl who seems to haunt her, the land and sea treaty, the bad blood between Sterling and Anamaya, Drayvenโ€™s mating line, whatever is going on with Vitra, the echoes and horrors, the dragons and wyrms, and more piled on top of that.

If this were a longer series and we were a few books in, I think slowly layering these ideas could have worked. But for a first book, I really wanted a simpler plot that focused on setting up the world and the stakes. Instead, everything is introduced at once, and none of it has time to fully settle.

What didnโ€™t work for me is that Anamayaโ€™s main reason for attending the school doesnโ€™t really contribute to this book at all. A lot of plot elements feel like theyโ€™re introduced, given a scene, and then dropped as the story moves on. It made the whole thing feel scattered rather than intentional.

Maybe all of this comes together more clearly in later books, and that could work for readers continuing the series. For me, though, there was just too much going on, and I donโ€™t think Iโ€™d remember most of these threads by the time the next book comes out.

Writing Style and Narration โœ๏ธ

One of my biggest pet peeves in modern fantasy novels is mixing modern elements into a fantasy setting, and that was an issue for me here. There is an explanation for why modern artifacts exist in this magical world, which otherwise feels like itโ€™s set in a post industrial era, but itโ€™s brushed over very quickly. On top of that, there are moments where technologically advanced items appear even though there doesnโ€™t seem to be something as basic as electricity, which felt off and distracting while reading.

The author does take a different approach with magical creatures, and there are several factions of supernatural beings. While I do admire the originality of some of the species mentioned, it often worked against the story for me. Calling a vampire a vampire and shifters werewolves would have helped ground the world a bit more, instead of adding more layers to an already overloaded setting.

The romance scenes themselves were well done. I liked the interactions between the FMC and the men, and the tension came across clearly on the page. That said, how the story got to those moments and how it moved on after them often left me feeling confused. Because of that, the romance ended up being a lukewarm silver lining for me rather than a standout element.

Synopsis

Anamaya Onyx Attends Nightbridge Academy

Anamaya Onyx is a sorcerer. She belongs to a magical faction, but her bloodline has been cursed. Years ago, as a punishment to a crime Dharma Onyx committed, their power was locked down, and in each generation has a unique curse. Anamayaโ€™s motherโ€™s curse is the curse of loss. She loses people she loves and loses her quality of life, and she is very sick.

Because the Onyx bloodline has been banished and exiled from their witch and sorcerer heritage, Anamaya does odd jobs. She hunts and freelances creatures called critters, magical beings that sting people and then attach to them through a psychic bond. She is on a train returning a captured critter to an apothecary who is making tinctures for her mother. Anamayaโ€™s mother eventually dies.

The Onyx bloodline is hated because of the curse and what happened years ago.

In her will, Anamayaโ€™s mother leaves her a box hidden under the bed. The box reveals that the truth is hidden beneath Nightbridge Academy, where magically inclined people and creatures train. Anamaya is barred from attending because she is exiled. She discovers a law stating that all witch bloodlines must be continued, and if a bloodline is in danger, the magical community must intervene. She uses her locked power and her exile as proof of danger and secures a meeting with the academy administration.

Echoes, Horrors and the Weave

On the way to the academy, her train is attacked by Echoes and Horrors, paranormal creatures that hunt in the woods. Hunters, magical beings, and students from the academy arrive and drive the creatures away, but it seems like one of them was willing to let Anamaya die because she is an Onyx. A shifter named Drayven who can turn into a barghest save her, and she rides on his back to the school.

At Nightbridge Academy, the students are hostile. She meets Vitra a teacher, who is actually very old but doesn’t show his age and is very attractive. He tells her he has no interest in letting her return to the academy, but her official hearing will take place the next day. Around this time, Anamaya also encounters Sterling Damascus, a half vampire, half human royal bastard, who killed her father. She intends to stay long enough to eventually exact revenge, revealing a hidden history between the two.

Anamayaโ€™s personal curse is that she cannot feel pain or pleasure. During an encounter with Vitra, he pins her against a wall, and she feels pleasure for the first time in years. The Weave is the source of magic in this world, and Anamaya is blocked from it despite still being part of it. She is placed with students called the Unwoven, who are being punished by being disconnected from the Weave.

The Unwoven students are Clary, Benedict, and Dori. Benedict is attuned to chaos magic. One of the girls is an Ironheart, known for physical strength. Doribelongs to the Embercrest coven and was allocated magic at birth. They do not hate Anamaya, because she is not the one who committed the crime tied to her bloodline.

The next morning, a human staff member escorts Anamaya to the Assembly Hall to meet the Coterie, a group of six decision makers. Some oppose restoring her power, while others support it. One member is Portia Reine, her former stepfatherโ€™s sister, who despises her. Eventually, Anamaya is accepted into the academy, with Heidi Embercrest taking her under her wing. Vitra is assigned as her advisor. Her room is prepared by ghosts led by Pip.

Anamaya is later summoned by Heidi via a raven. Clary and Dori help her arrange her room. During a walk, they encounter an injured hound belonging to Tamina, a vampire. Anamaya interferes on behalf of the hound, who is named Ruspin. Ruspin was given to Tamina as a result of a blood debt. Dori takes responsibility and the punishment for interfering. Anamaya realizes she is making friends.

At dinner, Tamina publicly hurts Ruspin to make a point. Anamaya intervenes. Tamina proposes a bargain: if Anamaya can withstand Taminaโ€™s attacks for three minutes, Tamina will leave them alone. Otherwise, Anamaya will become her pet for a week. Anamaya agrees. A fight is scheduled within the next few days. After interfering, Anamaya is injured and sent to the infirmary, but she does not tell anyone that she cannot feel pain. Vitra later warns her and walks her back to her room.

Anamaya is taken to meet the Weavers, frightening beings devoted to protecting the Weave. They restore her power gradually over two moon cycles. She must pass her classes to complete the process. They give her a riddle and instruct her not to tell anyone.

Attack of the Rats and Battle with Tamina

On her return, Viola forces her through a portal that sends her to the northern border, where she is attacked by giant rats. She escapes, despite not being supposed to, and is sprayed with intoxicating substances that leave her feeling disoriented. Drayven, the wolf shifter from earlier, rescues her again. She realizes she can feel his touch and is excited by this change.

Back at the academy, she attends history class taught by Constantine, who is upset by her lateness. After class, she meets a girl named Cami, and they walk to the dining hall together. Anamaya tells Cami what she saw with the Weavers, noting that some students who see them never return.

A drill begins, but Anamaya gets a bad feeling. It becomes clear this is not a drill when a dragon from the sea appears. The dragon shows interest in Anamaya. Vitra arrives and drives it away. It is revealed that there is a treaty between land and sea.

Anamaya interacts more with Sterling Damascus. As a child, she was friends with his sister Annabeth, a full blooded vampire. An accident caused Annabeth to turn and be burned. Anamayaโ€™s father died in a blood treaty meant to save her. Sterling killed him. Sterling and his brother Tyler blame Anamaya.

Anamaya eventually fights Tamina in the arena. Tamina realizes Anamaya cannot feel pain and severely injures her. Shifters and monsters arrive to support Anamaya because she is fighting for one of their own. Anamaya lasts the three minutes and wins. Ruspin is freed from his bargain. Anamaya collapses.

She wakes in the infirmary with Vitra and Drayven present. Drayven has marked her as a mate by licking her wound, an act that must be done three times to claim her. Vitra is upset by this.

Wicked Onyx Ending Explained

Anamaya later sleepwalks and is guided by a rook to a cliff. Vitra finds her and takes her to his room. They are strongly attracted to each other. Constantine interrupts and breaks the spell between them. Constantine asks Vitra if it is time again. Vitra says not her, not ever, not yet.

Anamaya learns about the Carvers, hunters who study horrors and are allowed access to the academy vaults. She realizes this vault is where the hidden book must be and decides to become a Carver. She also learns that her dreams are messages connected to Selina Evergreen.

Sterling arranges for Anamayaโ€™s combat exam to take place outside the wards against real horrors. Drayven secretly agrees to train her. During training, they grow close but separate because he is technically a teacher. Sterling later threatens Anamaya to intentionally fail the grading. She refuses.

During a Carver trial, horrors invade the test. Anamaya causes the ground to rumble and a landwyrm, believed to be extinct, emerges. It is unclear whether she intentionally summoned it, but it listens to her. She uses her magic to stop it and passes out.

When she wakes, her friends congratulate her and wonder what her magic is. Drayven later tells her he has marked her a second time and cannot be near her. His wife and children were murdered by Sterlingโ€™s family. Drayven and Sterling are bound by a blood pact that prevents them from killing each other. Drayven leaves Anamaya.

Anamaya dreams again and follows the raven to a pavilion, where she finds Selina Evergreenโ€™s body. Vitra helps exhume the body, breaking a spell. Selina was murdered by someone at the academy.

At the Reclamation Ceremony, Anamaya and her friends touch a magic stone and begin regaining their powers. Everyone regains their familiars. Anamaya should not receive one, but a rook appears and speaks to her. Her ability to feel pain returns.

In the epilogue, Vitra speaks to his familiar, a snake named Purina, and says he believes Anamaya may be both their salvation and their downfall.
