Barnes and Noble Release Night

Questions and clips from the release night party at Barnes and Noble in Los Angeles.

What’s your favorite Xaden quote?

https://www.tiktok.com/@sabteenwitxh/video/7462258597427236138

I’m trying to think of a way to give you something out of Onyx. No, it’s probably still “Thereโ€™s nowhere in existence you could go that I wouldnโ€™t find you, Violence.” It’s probably my favorite.

Would you fall in love with Xaden?

I think, the hard thing is that there are so many elements as my child cringes.

There’s so many elements of my husband that like end up in all my heroes. Because I’ve been with the same guys since I was 19, right? So like, it’s hard not to because I usually just snatch parts of my husband’s personality and like stick him into main characters and my kid is currently vomiting over there right now. So it’s kind of hard not to because there’s just so many elements of my husband in him.

Do your kids read your books? My daughter did on her honeymoon. Which I found to be odd. I think I’ve said it before. I’m like, I took your mother on your honeymoon. That was a choice.

But my boys don’t. My boy and I’m happy with that. I do have a kid who I think Googles himself. But the other kids know they don’t read it. I’m just their mom man.

How mentally unstable will I be after reading this?

https://www.tiktok.com/@danyell.amee/video/7462196844920180010

How many of you have therapists? No, I’m just kidding. Good, excellent, therapy is amazing. Stay, go. Medication is amazing.

I don’t think it’s that. I said to see one video where someone was like, “Rebecca says we’re gonna cry.” I’m like, “No, we didn’t.”

I think it was a very cathartic book for me, so I love it. I don’t think you’re gonna beโ€ฆ I don’t know.

I mean, how unstable have you been before?

Read with a friend.

Who is your favorite character to write?

https://www.tiktok.com/@jillmariereads/video/7462954599905774878

Usually it’s Ridoc because usually some smart-ass quip is what’s coming to my brain at that moment and any scene he’s in is automatically gonna get an extra page because the boy is just gonna quip off something.

But I really do love to write Imogen and I love to write Cat and I just love to write the dynamics between the squad. I do. I think the friendship and the found family aspect of it is probably one of my favorite things to write.

What Taylor Swift Era is each Fourth Wing book?

https://www.tiktok.com/@emmamakesmagic/video/7462222060681579822

So I always thought they’re almost all rep. There’s like a lot of rep. Because I’m a rep girl, right? Then she put out TTPD. And I was like, oh, are you hiding in my bathroom? Writing songs about life? So I would say it’s mostly, I would say mostly Onyx is rep coded. Really is. There’s a lot of did something bad in there. There’s a lot of so goes in there. But also, Fourth Wing is very, I don’t know, man, that’s a really tough question. It’s a really tough question.

Oh gosh, Fourth Wing is probably, it’s probably Lover because I wrote a lot. I wrote a lot of these books to Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince. Like honestly, I heard that song and I was like “I wish one day I could write a cool school like that” and this and this and this and then I was like “hahahaha” and now I can’t. So probably very Lover.

And Iron Flame is, gosh I don’t know, probably Fearless. Maybe a little bit of Speak Now. And then I guess just taking backing off of that because I’m like myself.

What is the background song to Violet and Xaden’s romance?

Oh So It Goes. I wrote a ton of Onyx Storm So It Goes.

How much of the entire series did you plot out before you started writing it?

Almost all of it. So I know where every book is going, how every book starts, every book ends. It’s mostly how we get there that changes for me. And the things that I laid in that I might not have even realized, I laid in cuz I’ll go back and look at it.

But I knew because we had the TV series before we were coming out of edits on Fourth Wing, I had to map out a synopsis, which is nice. It’s like I have a roadmap, so I can’t go too far.

Onyx Storm being her favorite book in the series

https://www.tiktok.com/@dianareadds/video/7462282784753716511

It’s my favorite book in this series. I think I’m a more confident writer, I think I’m more
confident in the world, I think Violet’s more confident, so I just I love it and I hope you
guys like it and if you don’t that’s okay just don’t tell me. And this is something that I think
it’s my favorite book in this series.

What was the most challenging part of writing Onyx Storm?

https://www.tiktok.com/@jennetteyreads/video/7462566766489652510

The most challenging was the pace. I really wish I had had longer. Not from a perspective of mental health. Like it was just a really, really big year and a half and I don’t think anyone can prepare themselves for what happened and how fast it happened and the scrutiny that came down on me and my family.

When you know that every line you write is going to be scrutinized and talked about
and mocked or not mocked, it does things to your head that are not safe for public consumption.

So I think the most challenging was the fact of just getting it done because I really didn’t think I was going to. I thought this book would kill me.

Like literally thought this book was going to kill me.

The best part was the moment my editor Alice texted me and told me it had gone to print. I burst in two tears because it was gone and I love it.

I love it so much.

And I’m so glad it’s done. It’s my favorite.

But it was definitely just the process of trying to balance writing and escaping into my head in an environment that is not conducive right now to escaping.

This is a collection of the interviews Rebecca Yarros did up to the release of Onyx Storm. It includes details of Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Oynx Storm, and teasers of the next book.

Good Morning America

Rebecca Yarros talks new book 'Onyx Storm'

What to expect from Onyx Storm?

Its a war college for dragon riders, it’s got romance, it has intrigue, it has politics and tons of dragons.

Is it ok if I go straight to Onyx Storm?

No you really want to get the others first. Otherwise we’re dropping your right in the middle of the story and it’s going to take you a while to catch up. [Fourth Wing and Iron Flame]

How does it feel to finally see this in readers hands?

It’s amazing to see it out. It’s really surreal, kind of like it’s happening to somebody else, but it’s also, I see somebody reading it, and I think, oh, you’ve been in my brain? Like, we have this collective experience. – We’ve been to this place together, so it’s a really great feeling.

Will Violet and Xaden go back to being enemies?

Well, I mean, I think you should read Onyx Storm see where we leave off, kind of go from there, but you never know. You’ve got to arc and romance across five books.

How far along are you with the rest of the series?

So, they’re plotted, but I haven’t started. I’m taking a little bit of a break to kind of rest and recuperate. I’ve been on deadlines for two and a half years, and I just wanna make sure my body and my mind are healthy before I start writing the next books. But don’t worry, they’re coming, they’re all plotted.

They’re all plotted- So, you kinda know where this is heading?

Yeah, I had to, absolutely. We knew we were gonna have the television show when we were in “Edits for “Forth Wing,” which was absolutely surreal. So, I turned in the synopsis back then.

Does Violet have a third love interest?

I’m not really a fan of love triangles. I’m just not. I’m not.

You want the purity of the real thing?

I do. Doesn’t mean I’m not gonna make ’em work for it, though.

Are you also gonna be writing chapters in Xaden’s point of view?

I usually write one chapter in Xaden’s point of view per book. One per book and sometimes bonus chapters.

Are things are going to get quote, “Real bad,” before they get better?

Well, I mean, probably.

Oh, any, you wanna shed any light on how bad things might get?

Well, I think in any story, you have to really dig characters down to where they’re at their lowest before they can build back up and fight again. So we really gotta drag ’em down to the depth so they can arm up and fight.

At the start of the book, it’s addressed to all of the people, that idea of people getting dragged down. How much of that is what you’re writing from, from your own personal experience?

Oh, definitely. I was the kid that was caught reading under desks in school and made fun of for being smart and things like that. And I think that especially with the chronic illness representation, it’s so important for people to feel seen. And that’s what that dedication was for, was just people like me so that.

Will Rebecca Yaros leave us on a cliffhanger in the next book?

Oh, that’s a definite. Definite.

How fun is it to write a cliffhanger?

I love it. I picture ’em. I already know what it is before I start the book. And I drive toward that moment with glee.

For “Onyx Storm,” you say the hardest part of the writing process was the ending.

Yeah, it really was. I think making sure you’re tying up all the points and you’re leading into book four and making sure you laid everything out there. And I did something a little different, not to give any spoilers away, with the ending of “Onyx Storm” that I fought really hard for and am proud of.

When you say fought for it, what does that look like?

When you fight for it, anytime you have discussions with your editors about what things should look like, how series should go, and as a writer, you wanna, of course, listen to other people’s advice. I’m never the only expert in my field. So it was definitely some discussions, but I won, we got the ending.

You won. – I won, we have the ending. So when you read that cliffhanger, you know. – I know. – It’s all Rebecca. – Yeah, you can blame me. 100% blaming.
