Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree is a cozy, high fantasy novel about Viv, an orc barbarian who hangs up her sword (literally) to open a shop serving a gnomish delicacy known as coffee. In this kindhearted story, Viv navigates her life without spilling blood, while finding herself and a new family along the way.

I didn’t know what to expect from Legends & Lattes, knowing only that it’s a cozy fantasy and a short novel that. I wasn’t expecting how enchanted I’d feel reading a story about opening a coffee shop, from nailing the first wooden plank to watching a magical plotline tie it all together. Finding myself crying over an orc hugging a rattkin, Legends & Lattes has made it to my list of most special reading experiences of all time.

Description

High Fantasy with a double-shot of self-reinvention

Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.

However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve.

A hot cup of fantasy slice-of-life with a dollop of romantic froth.

Review

Overall Impressions 😊

I adored this. It reminded me of a high-fantasy version of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books I read as a child. The entire story is lovely, wholesome, and kind, monotone in a way that makes stillness feel charming.

From the premise, I thought I would get some sort of comedy, but it was more of a slice-of-life story about small kindnesses, second chances, and finding family when you least expect it.

The entire thing felt like a blanket for my heart, and this is going to be my new standard for when I need a palate cleanser or just something lighter to enjoy reading.

Legends & Lattes defines what cozy fantasy should feel like, it made slice of life charming. I wanted to grab a cinnamon roll Thimble made and a mug of delicious latte to go while wandering the streets of Thune.

Perfect For Fans Of… 🌟

This book is very literal. From nailing down the first plank to making lattes to installing stoves, everything is meticulously described. If you enjoy novels that ground you in their cozy immersiveness, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this.

To me, it read like a cozy, high-fantasy version of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, while somehow crossing over with Baldur’s Gate 3. If you’re a fan of DnD campaigns, or enjoy cozy fantasy like Emily Wilde’s but prefer something more high fantasy and less romance, or if you’re simply looking for a wholesome way to cleanse your palate in a sea of dark fantasy or fantasy romance, this is a wonderful read.

Characters 👥

The main cast is humble, loving, and forgiving. I rooted for all of them. Viv, Tandri, Cal, and Thimble were all instant favorites. I even rooted for Madrigal, the assumed queen of Thune’s shady underbelly.

I connected with Viv’s attempt at a “double-shot of self-reinvention,” her dreams of a fresh start, and the unreasonable amount of hope I couldn’t help but respect and root for. I loved Tandri, a succubus that is disliked by most due to her nature, and Thimble, the quiet ratkin with a different kind of resolve. Cal, the grumpy hob with a heart of steel, added to the mix and was just the perfect beverage to sip on.

I would read backstories about every single one of these characters, and I cannot wait to see them in Brigands and Breadknives.

This new recipe for found family was brewed to perfection for me, like the first coffee of the morning. (I cannot promise to be done with coffee themed puns.)

Plot 🗺️

Legends & Lattes is a cozy, wholesome slice-of-life story about Viv, who gives up her adventures to take on a new challenge in an attempt to reinvent herself. While I made a big deal about the grounding, immersive, action-by-action writing style, that is not to say there isn’t plot. There’s plenty.

While the coffee shop finds its footing, there is a fabled artifact, a forgotten legend, glimpses of decades of packing steel, a giant dire-cat named Amity, and the struggle to hold onto what you were versus who you want to be, all woven perfectly together.

All of this, topped with the allure of swinging swords replaced by a dollop of romantic froth and the cutest way of inventing chocolate croissants, makes for the best hot cup of fantasy slice-of-life you can ask for.

My Favorite Quote to Hook You 📣

“Well, shit. Milky bean water. I’ll be damned.”

Writing Style and Narration ✍️

This is one of the most immersive pieces of literature I’ve read recently (or should I say listened to?). I received this book from my library in audiobook format, narrated by the author himself, and it was the coziest high fantasy fairy tale I could have asked for.

It’s wonderful, warm, immersive, and keeps you engaged. I cannot believe I’m saying this, but I think I could take a stab at building a coffee shop myself from scratch. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio format and would definitely recommend it.

The narration style fits perfectly to find yourself in the cozy, fantasy world of the city of Thune.

Legends & Lattes Synopsis

Trading Her Blade for Lattes Above the Ley Lines of Thune

Viv, a barbarian orc who worked as a mercenary for hire is looking for a change. After defeating a Scalvert, she grabs the Scalvert stone embedded in it’s forehead to pursue a legend. The stone is rumored to attract luck and success, and she knows just what to do with it.

During one of her adventures, Viv has tasted a gnomish delicacy called coffee. Ever since she had her first few shots of magical bean water, she dreamt of opening a shop of her own. Viv, takes her bounty of her latest hunt, the Scalvert stone, and finds ley lines sitting on top of an old livery and decides to open a coffee shop.

She goes to the docs and observes the workers there. A hob who builds ship at the doc catches her eye with the quality of work he does and his work ethic. Viv hires Cal to turn the livery into a coffee shop plank by plank.

A stone-fey named Lack shows up, representing the local territory’s owner, The Madrigal. Lack urges the battle-weary orc to pay a monthly tribute to protect Thune’s first ever coffee shop. Viv, having spent her lifetime of bounties hunting men like Lack and despises the idea of paying the tribute.

Cal urges her to do so to keep trouble a far. When Viv refuses, he urges her to hang her sword Blackblood up to deter any potential conflict. Wanting to eave her life of bloodshed behind, Viv jumps at the opportunity to permanently leave Blackblood behind, hanging up on the wall covered in flowers.

Viv puts up an ad for help, as her orders for machinery begins arriving. A succubus named Tandri responds and Viv hires her. The two new partners begin putting what Viv learned from the gnomes in her travels to practice.

Viv doesn’t have the faintest idea on how to run a coffee shop but she trusts the potential true rewards of the uncharted path and the ancient magic of the Scalvert stone. Therefore, the shop opens, with the name Legends & Lattes.

New Rivals, Cinnamon Rolls and Old Frenemies

Viv’s shop opens. They run into issues attracting customers due to no one knowing what coffee is. But after Tandri’s promotional ideas, they begin accumulating some regulars. One of the regulars is a quiet rattkin who bakes.

Among their customers, they get daily working men and women, a gnome who plays chess with himself, a college student studying the magical ley lines named Hemington and even a dire-cat whom they begin calling Amity.

The college student discovers some anomalies in the fluctuation of magic in the shop which Viv accredits to the Scalvert stone underneath the bricks of the shop, but doesn’t say anything.

As the shop begin attracting more and more regulars, one of Viv’s old frenemies named Fennus visit. Fennus, a former member of Viv’s party and someone who has always showed contempt for her has found out about the legends about the Scalvert stone which he accuses Viv of concealing. He wants his “cut” from the stone, but Amity chases him away.

Realizing their customers want something to eat with their coffee, Viv notices the rattkin has flour on his clothes and wearing an apron. She asks him if he can bake. T

The rattkin, Thimble, shows up the next day with cinnamon rolls and Viv hires him. He eventually bakes biscotti which they name Thimblet and chocolate croissants.

Flaky pastry and a freshly brewed cup are an instant hit in Thune and they begin attracting more and more customers.

They eventually get a former farm hand named Pendry who has become a bard. It takes Pendry a few attempts to find his confidence to play in front of the crowds, however he begins accumulating a steady audience.

Tension with the Madrigal Grows

Lack and a few others keep showing up reminding them of the tribute due at the end of the month. Two of Viv’s former party members show up and advise her to show strength. Viv refuses, not wanting to go back to her old ways in the way of success. A friendship between her and Tandri grow however, and Viv realizes her shop is not the only thing she is at risk of losing.

Viv arranges a meeting with the Madrigal, following the advice of one of her former party member’s. Tandri worries about her, but is proud that Viv is not taking any weapons to the meeting.

The Madrigal, turns out, is an elderly woman. She also knows and dislikes Fennus. Fennus it turns out, told the Madrigal about the Scalvert Stone in the hopes that it will raise conflict, but it only ended up deepening her dislike towards him.

The Madrigal does not want to take the stone as it needs to be on top of the ley lines to work, and she also doesn’t seem like a bad woman. They also agree that Viv will pay for the tribute in the form of cinnamon rolls.

Viv worries about Fennus, so she enlists Hemington who is an expert on wards to help her be alerted if Fennus makes a move.

A man named Kellin who is associated with the Madrigal keeps showing up in the shop. He is infatuated with Tandri whom rebuffs his attempts at asking her out. Viv kicks him out of the shop multiple times but Kellin keeps showing up boasting about his connections with the Madrigal.

Tandri invites Viv to a picnic which resembles a date. They talk about her past. Tandri attended the university, hoping her nature as a succubus wouldn’t come in the way of that but she couldn’t overcome the prejudice others have for her. Viv walks her home and Tandri invites her inside but Viv gently declines, leaving, despite clearly being interested in the succubus woman.

One night while Viv sleeps, Fennus breaks into the shop, alerting the ward. Viv confronts him. Amity shows up and chases him off. Tandri is shocked to hear the elf has made a move and decide to sleep in the shop from there on out. Viv, however, begins worrying about what would happen if she lost her shop.

Legends & Lattes Ending Explained

One night, Tandri and Viv wake up to Amity meowing and pawing at them. The shop is on fire with supernatural green flames that cannot be put out by the water. Viv saves Tandri, a lockbox and one of the coffee machines. The shop burns down, and the Scalvert Stone is stolen.

Viv is devastated. She goes back to the wreck the next day, finding Blackblood warped a metaphor of her life. Defeated, Viv decides to give up on her dreams.

Cal and Tandri won’t let her do that however and they convince her to rebuild. They begin rebuilding the shop with mysterious parcels and materials keep showing up. Cal, Tandri and Viv begin rebuilding with help from the townspeople. Thimble, Pendry and even Hemingway lend a hand.

Just as they’re getting ready to reopen, the mysterious gnome who plays chess with himself showes up. Viv tells him about the Scalvert Stone who tells him the legends are misleading. The Scalvert Stone does bring fortune but not in the form of luck. Instead, it brings people with kindred spirits together.

Viv thinks of Tandri, Cal, Thimble and Pendry. She even thinks about Hemingway and the Madrigal, and understands the true treasure the stone has given her.

The shop reopens. Viv insists Cal and Tandri become co-owners of the shop.

She then shows Tandri the new and improved loft, with a bedroom for Tandri as well as herself. She asks Tandri to move into the shop, who agrees and kisses her.

Viv marvels at the fortune she found, in the form of her brand new family.
